the yamanaka’s came to canada in 1917 landing in prince rupert bc, and were proudly nikkei kanadajinnn (日系カナダ人) once released from the slocan city internment camps, the yamanaka issei (一世) and nisei (二世) relocated to ontario settling primarily in toronto on, where the next generation of children,the sansei (三世) were all nearly exclusively women, those of who married, all individually opted to keep their family name. many of their children, the yonsei (四世) have elected to adopt their mother’s surname in a similar vein to preserve the lineage and history that would sooner be disregarded and forgotten.

rebecca-koby is a fourth generation japanese-canadian/yonsei (四世) post artist from ontario. graduated in 2023 with a BA in media production from toronto metropolitian’s radio and television program.
